Jan 05,2022

In 2020, the COVID-19 epidemic rapidly spread around the world, which had a certain impact on the production and operation of ports. But overall, the world's top 20 container ports saw a 0.7 percent increase in throughput from 2019, despite the outbreak. Some ports are in deep trouble, others are catching up, please follow this article to find out.

From the perspective of ranking, there is little change in the TOP20 ranking of global container port throughput in 2020.
In the first echelon (container throughput of more than 20 million TEU), the container throughput of Shanghai Port has ranked first in the world for 11 consecutive years. The biggest change was the port of Qingdao, which moved up one place to overtake Busan in sixth place. Qingdao Port will open 20 new routes in 2020, including 14 foreign trade routes. The number of routes will increase and the integration of Shandong Port will avoid the influence of excessive competition. The container throughput of Qingdao Port will rise to 21.01 million TEU.
In the second tier (between 10 million TEU and 20 million TEU), Hong Kong's container throughput declined, with Tianjin port moving up one place to eighth place with a 6.1% growth rate. Kaohsiung's container throughput slipped to 9.62 million TEU from 10.43 million TEU in 2019, pushing it out of the second tier.
In the third tier (container throughput under 10 million TEU), Tanjong Palapas moved up three places to 15th. The U.S. ports of Long Beach and New York/New Jersey burst into the TOP20, edging out Dalian and Linchaban. During the outbreak, U.S. consumers working from home saw an increase in demand for medical equipment, home improvement supplies, sports equipment and office furniture. U.S. e-commerce sales grew 32% to $790 billion in 2020. Consumer demand led to a 6.3% increase in container throughput at Long Beach and 1.5% at the ports of New York/New Jersey.
In terms of growth rate, the number of container ports with rising throughput growth rate in 2020 decreased compared with that in 2019. But there are still more than half of the container port throughput growth growth.
Tanjong Palapas (8.0%), Long Beach (6.3%) and Tianjin (6.1%) were the top three ports in terms of growth. its

From the increase point of view, the increase has 5 ports. Among them, Shenzhen Port's container throughput increased by 2.9 percentage points. Shenzhen Port, which is dominated by foreign trade goods, was obviously affected by the outbreak in the first half of the year. In the second half of the year, as China's economy recovered and China's foreign trade picked up, the container throughput of Shenzhen Port has reached a new monthly record in a row with the booming Sino-US flight, and the throughput has finally achieved a positive year-on-year growth of 2.9 percentage points.
Nine ports saw a decline in growth. Among them, the port of Antwerp affected by outbreaks in weak in the first half of 2020, starting in July container began to rebound, transit volume remained stable, thanks to the recovery of the far east - Europe and Europe's internal container transportation, makes the port of Antwerp, although growth decreased but still keep the positive growth of 1.4%.
The port where growth was unchanged was the Port of Los Angeles. Despite a decline in container throughput in the first half of the year, since the third quarter, the surge in consumer purchases has led to an increase in the volume of imported cargo, causing serious congestion at the port of Los Angeles, which has increased transportation costs and led shippers to turn to air exports. The volume of container exports at the port has declined.
The growth rate turns to drop by increasing port to have 5. In Port Klang, due to the epidemic, the port area was blocked and controlled, and the movement of dockworkers was limited, which had a negative impact on the port calls of ships, resulting in a decrease in container traffic volume. The annual growth rate of container throughput dropped from 10.3% in 2019 to -2.5% in 2020, a sharp drop of 12.8 percentage points.

Geographically, China's ports have done well. Apart from Hong Kong, Kaohsiung and Dalian, other ports have achieved positive growth in container throughput. Tianjin port opened nine new container liner routes, such as to xiamen, qinzhou port of the "two navigation" the high-quality goods route, as well as in the bohai rim regional "everyday" class airline service, and improve the ability of freezer, stockpiling, overall capacity is more than doubled in early 2020, the final container throughput rate reached 6.1%, leading the country.
