Shipping from China for Small Businesses: How to Start

In short: Small businesses can start shipping from China with Baitong Logistics without a large minimum order quantity, because LCL consolidation lets you share a container instead of booking a full one. Your first shipment needs four things: a supplier who can deliver to a China address, a commercial invoice and packing list, an HS code for each product, and a destination address with an importer of record. We handle collection, export clearance, consolidation, freight and — where agreed — DDP delivery to your door.

What "small business" actually changes about shipping

Small importers are not running a different process from large ones. The same documents, the same customs rules and the same carriers apply. What changes is the cost structure: at low volume, a full container is uneconomic, so the sensible model is consolidation.

That is the whole reason LCL exists. Your pallets share a container with cargo from other shippers, and you pay for the space you use rather than for the whole box. Practical savings on consolidated LCL versus a dedicated container at low volume are commonly in the 20–35% range, before the fixed costs of a full container booking are counted.

Your first shipment, step by step

  1. Send the enquiry. Origin city, destination postcode, product, quantity, carton dimensions and weight, and the date the goods will be ready. Without dimensions we can only give a rough rate.
  2. Choose the mode. LCL sea is the cheapest per kilogram at volume; air is the fastest; express courier suits very small parcels; FCL becomes cheaper once you pass roughly 15 cubic metres. We quote the realistic options rather than only the cheapest headline rate.
  3. Confirm the quote in writing. Check what is included — origin handling, export clearance, freight, destination charges, duty and delivery. A quote that excludes destination charges is not comparable to a DDP quote.
  4. Book and get a reference. You receive a booking reference, a cut-off date and the warehouse address your supplier should deliver to.
  5. Cargo received and consolidated. We check carton count against the packing list, and flag discrepancies before the container closes.
  6. Export clearance and departure. We file the export declaration and report the departure milestone.
  7. Destination clearance and delivery. Under DDP we handle duty and delivery; under port-to-port you or your broker clear the goods.

Where small importers lose money

  • Quoting only the freight rate. Destination handling, duty and delivery often exceed the ocean freight itself on small volumes.
  • Shipping without a verified HS code. A wrong code means a wrong duty rate, and at destination that becomes a delay plus a correction fee.
  • Ignoring carton dimensions. LCL is charged on volume, not only weight. A light but bulky product can cost more than expected.
  • Booking at the last minute. Cut-off dates exist. Late cargo waits for the next sailing.
  • Choosing postal-style clearance for a commercial sale. It is cheaper per parcel but slower and less predictable, which is a poor fit when you have a customer waiting.

What you should expect from us

For a first enquiry we aim to reply within 12 hours, propose a solution within about 10 minutes once the cargo details are complete, and issue a quotation within about 30 minutes. Those are service targets, not marketing language; they exist because small importers rarely get fast answers from large forwarders.

Start with one shipment, not a contract

There is no reason to commit to an annual contract to test a supplier. Send your details to overseas02@batongls.com or WhatsApp +86 191 2930 8513 and ask for an LCL and an air option side by side, with all charges itemised.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum shipment size for Baitong Logistics?

LCL consolidation means you can ship without booking a full container, so there is no need to fill a 20ft box to start. The practical minimum is set by the fixed origin and destination charges, which we itemise so you can see where a small shipment stops being economical.

Can I ship a first order of a few cartons?

Yes. A few cartons are usually best sent by express courier or consolidated air rather than sea, because the fixed charges on an LCL shipment can exceed the value of the freight on very small volumes.

Do I need a company to import from China?

You need an importer of record in the destination country. That can be your own company, or an agent acting on your behalf. Requirements differ by country and we confirm them for your destination before booking.

Can you collect from multiple suppliers?

Yes. Consolidation from multiple suppliers into one shipment is a standard service, with goods received at a China warehouse and combined under one handling procedure.
